When I first began making jewelry, my ideas were far bigger than my ability to execute them properly on a given jewelry piece. I always loved the way cluster necklaces enchanted the eye with a flood of beads and reflection, each bead independently beautiful but altogether stellar amidst the others. I practiced making them for hours at a time, frustrated that I couldn’t get them to look like the image I had in my head. One day, I realized the problem. I was trying to add too many beads on each branch of the cluster. Less is more.
That was the lesson I took away from the nearly two-year block of time I took me gain some measure of comfort in making this kind of necklace. I still think of them as a cluster **** and chuckle to myself remembering how far I’ve come. These necklaces could never be made the same way twice. To try would be a lesson in futility and frustration. They are made to be kept simple. It’s in their simplicity that their true beauty and uniqueness shines.
